Staying Connected After Loss

RachelMar 20262 min read

For a long time, the message around grief was pretty harsh: move on, let go, don't look back.

The idea was that healing meant leaving your person—and your relationship with them—in the past as quickly as possible. But that doesn't sit right for a lot of people. And honestly, it doesn't have to.

We now understand that when someone dies, the relationship doesn't just disappear. Love doesn't shut off because someone is gone. In many ways, your connection to them continues—it just changes shape. Maintaining that connection can actually be part of healing.

That might look like visiting their grave, celebrating their birthday, or acknowledging the day they died. It could be cooking their favourite meal, listening to music that reminds you of them, or sharing stories with people who knew them. Sometimes it's as simple as talking to them in your head or out loud.

There's no one "right" way to stay connected. What matters is that it feels meaningful to you. Grief isn't about forgetting. It's about finding ways to carry your person with you—while still living your life.

If you're grieving and looking for ways to honour your connection while moving forward, I offer a free 15-minute consultation. You don't have to navigate this alone.

With compassion,
